With summer upon us, it's natural to be more conscious about reaching for the sunscreen before heading outdoors ... which leads us to ask: is your sunscreen's SPF all that it claims to be?
In a 2017 report, the EWG found that more than 75% of the sunscreens marketed and sold in the U.S. not only contain harmful chemicals, but also do not live up to their sun protection factor claims. To make matters worse, half of these would not even be permitted for sale in the European Union because they could never pass their stringent testing standards!
How then, can we choose a sun protection option that provides more benefit than harm?
It's simple ,,, READ YOUR LABELS! Your sunscreen's primary active ingredient is the most important factor in providing you with safe and adequate protection. Ingredients are listed in order of their quantity on the label, and your best and healthiest choice is to use a product with non-nano zinc oxide as it's ONE main active ingredient. Mineral based sunscreens block both UVA and UVB rays better than their chemically based competitors and are rated safer and more effective by the EWG. Still, some mineral based sunscreens have very low percentages of zinc oxide. Instead, they contain Synthetic Product Fillers as primary active ingredients, which boosts their SPF but does not protect your skin from other damage.
